Summer of Service Mobilizes DLC Employee Volunteers Across the Region
Annual campaign helps families meet essential needs while strengthening local communities
Duquesne Light Company (DLC) employees volunteered more than 1,500 hours in the Pittsburgh region, setting a record for the company’s annual Summer of Service campaign.
Through this program, nearly 300 team members helped address challenges related to affordability, food insecurity, family stability and workforce development. Those efforts represent an estimated $56,000 in volunteer time and talent invested directly into local communities and nonprofit partners
"Service is central to DLC's mission. While we serve our customers every day by powering the Pittsburgh region, Summer of Service gives our employees another way to support the communities we call home through hands-on volunteer efforts," said Angela Feldbauer, DLC’s senior manager of environment, social, and governance and corporate giving. "From providing hot meals to creating opportunities for our region's youth, these volunteer efforts reflect our commitment to a vibrant Pittsburgh region.”
According to United Way's ALICE research, many households in Allegheny and Beaver counties face financial pressures despite being employed. Summer of Service partnered with nonprofits helping bridge those gaps through direct services, educational opportunities and community-based programs.
Supporting Families and Essential Needs
DLC employee volunteers worked with Light of Life to assemble furniture for families transitioning out of homelessness and partnered with The Education Partnership to prepare school supply kits for educators and students. Volunteers also joined 412 Food Rescue to process and package food for community distribution.
"412 Food Rescue's Good Food Project mobilizes volunteers to transform rescued food donations into healthy, ready-to-eat meals and packaged grocery bags that are distributed through community partners,” said Mark Harrison, volunteer satisfaction and community events manager at 412 Food Rescue. “Between January and October of 2026, volunteers in the Kitchen Prep program prepared more than 26,000 meals that were donated to local nonprofit partners or free fridges across our region, allowing residents to access these meals without barriers. Volunteers in the Grocery Bagging program have prepared over 10,000 grocery bags during the same period, which are donated to residents within the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh network."
DLC employees and members of the company's executive leadership team partnered with Beverly's PGH, assembling birthday celebration kits, care packages for mothers and dental hygiene kits for children. The effort helped create meaningful moments for families while supporting the nonprofit's mission of strengthening communities through its Birthdays, Babies and Basics programs.
“We really appreciate working with companies who believe in celebrating and strengthening families,” said Megs Yunn, founder of Beverly’s PGH. “Duquesne Light is a wonderful testament to how you can give back to the community.”
Investing in the Region's Future Workforce
Summer of Service also supported workforce development initiatives designed to connect young people with future career opportunities.
During Skilled Trades Week, DLC employees welcomed more than 60 high school students from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania's Learn and Earn Program to the company's Woods Run campus. Volunteers shared their career journeys and provided students with firsthand exposure to careers in the energy industry. Earlier this year, DLC also provided a $15,000 charitable investment to the program.
