DLC Helps Connect Local Students to Skilled Trades
Partners with Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania to promote careers and opportunities
Earlier this summer, more than 60 local high school students visited DLC’s Woods Run campus during two separate visits as part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania’s Learn and Earn Program. In conjunction with Skilled Trades Week, participants from the organization’s McKeesport, downtown Pittsburgh and Shadyside clubhouses were provided with an exciting opportunity to explore careers in the energy industry while learning more about the skills, training and career paths available at DLC.
From Energy Demonstrations to Career Conversations
The visits each began with an introduction to the energy industry through interactive activities, like energy 101 trivia and electric vehicle demonstrations. These activities offered students an engaging way to explore some of the technology and concepts in the industry before taking a closer look at the people and careers that make it possible.
During lunch, students heard from various team members during a panel on career paths and professional experiences. Panelists represented different trades, career paths and tenures, giving students a wide range of perspectives.
The conversations also helped challenge some common assumptions about what it takes to build a successful career. For students, one of the most significant takeaways from the visits was learning that a four-year college degree is not the only path they can take.
“Providing students with firsthand exposure to skilled trades helps them see the opportunities in the energy industry as real possibilities for their future,” said Angela Feldbauer, DLC’s senior manager of ESG and corporate giving. “Our employees played a key role in this by sharing their experiences and passion for the work they do, while highlighting the important role they play in serving our communities.”
Observing the Work Up Close
The afternoon shifted from conversation to exploration as students toured the electrical distribution technology training center and transportation garage. Moving through the facilities, students had the opportunity to see where employees train, work and develop the technical expertise needed to support our operations. The tours also helped connect career conversations from earlier in the day with the environments where those careers happen.
Throughout the day, students gained a broader understanding of the energy industry, the work behind powering our region and the wide range of careers available in skilled trades. They also gained a greater understanding that these careers offer not only strong earning potential, but also a meaningful connection to our communities.
Investing in Future Opportunities
DLC’s collaboration with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania is part of a broader commitment to workforce development. Earlier this year, we provided a $15,000 grant to the organization to further invest in opportunities in our region.
The recent site visits extended that investment beyond financial support by giving students direct access to our employees, facilities and career knowledge.
For our team members who participated, it was a privilege to share their insights, experiences and career journeys with young people who are beginning to consider what comes next. For the students, it was an opportunity to learn and see these jobs up close — reminding them that there’s more than one path to a rewarding career.
