U. S. Steel, Duquesne Light Company Partner to Bring New Eagle Cams Online for Hays Bald Eagle Nest Return

PITTSBURGH - U. S. Steel and Duquesne Light Company (DLC) welcomed the return of the Hays Bald Eagles to the Mon Valley by partnering on the installation of two new webcams at the nest. Viewers will be able to stream the eagle cam 24/7, thanks to Pixcams, as the eagles fly, hunt, and prepare for the possibility of welcoming an egg (or eggs) in 2026. U. S. Steel employees constructed a stand to accommodate the equipment needed to power the cameras, while DLC provided the necessary power supply to keep the cameras streaming. Employees from both companies worked collaboratively to ensure the best possible viewing experience so a worldwide audience can enjoy America’s National Bird.

The Hays Bald Eagles began nesting in the Mon Valley in 2013, where they hatched and raised nearly two dozen eaglets, with fans following along via webcam. Their last nest collapsed during a storm in 2024, sparking fears that the birds had left the area for good. The latest nest was discovered in the summer of 2025, a short distance from the original nesting place.

“This is an exciting time for us as we welcome these iconic birds back to the Mon Valley,” said Don German, Manager of U. S. Steel’s Irvin Works Plant. “It’s beautiful to see that they are here and thriving, thanks to clean air, water, and abundant food supply. The opportunity to watch the eagles on Pixcams will serve as a great learning tool for schoolchildren and an ever-growing online community of bird lovers.” He continued, “We are grateful for Duquesne Light’s partnership to make this opportunity possible, and to the Glen Hazel Housing Authority for allowing the cameras to be placed on their property.”
“At DLC, we cherish the Hays eagles along with so many Pittsburghers as a shared tradition. When severe weather displaced the nest, we rallied with our partners to support the birds’ new home and those who follow their journey," said Christine Waller, DLC’s vice president of communications and corporate responsibility. "By powering the cameras directly from DLC’s grid, we’re strengthening access for classrooms, families and fans, and showing how collaboration can rebuild and protect local wildlife and advance a more sustainable southwestern Pennsylvania.”

The addition of the new cameras brings the total number of bird-watching cameras in the area to eight. Cameras are also located around and above the nest of eagles Irvin and Stella at U. S. Steel’s Irvin Plant, and a red-tail hawk nest in the same area. To keep up with the Mon Valley Eagles, visit https://pixcams.com/uss-eagles/.
