Penn Hills School District Achieves Major Energy Milestone with Lighting Retrofits and Rebate from Duquesne Light Company
Energy-saving upgrades illuminate brighter future for local schools, generate $136,000 in utility rebates

PITTSBURGH — In a significant step toward sustainability and fiscal responsibility, Penn Hills School District proudly announces the completion of comprehensive lighting retrofit projects at Penn Hills Elementary, middle, and high schools. The initiative marks a transformative investment in the future of the district, both in terms of environmental stewardship and cost savings.
Recognizing the importance of energy efficiency and environmental impact, Penn Hills School District embarked on an ambitious project to update lighting infrastructure across its key educational facilities. The newly completed retrofits involved replacing outdated lighting systems with state-of-the-art, energy-efficient solutions to provide better illumination for students and staff, create more comfortable learning environments and decrease annual energy consumption on a district-wide scale.
The lighting retrofit projects were completed with the expertise of Constellation Energy, a leading provider of energy solutions that specializes in helping organizations achieve their sustainability goals.
One of the most compelling outcomes of the lighting retrofit projects is the substantial reduction in energy consumption. The district is projected to save approximately 1.6 million kilowatt hours annually, a figure that translates into significant cost savings and a notable reduction in the environmental footprint of the schools. Such a reduction in energy usage not only lowers utility expenses but also demonstrates leadership in environmental stewardship, setting a positive example for students and the broader community.
To put the savings in perspective, 1.6 million kilowatt hours is enough to power about 150 homes for an entire year, underscoring the magnitude of this achievement. These upgrades will pay dividends for years to come, freeing up resources that can be reinvested in educational programs, extracurricular activities and facility improvements that directly benefit students.
To further support the district's sustainability efforts, Constellation Energy proactively submitted the projects for rebates through Duquesne Light Company’s (DLC) Business Solutions Program, which is designed to incentivize the adoption of energy-efficient technology by offering financial rebates to organizations that complete qualifying upgrades.
As a result, Penn Hills School District received a rebate of $136,495 from DLC. This significant rebate offsets the district’s initial investment, making the path to sustainability even more accessible and cost-effective. The funds can be utilized to further support educational initiatives or invest in additional infrastructure improvements.
“We commend the Penn Hills School District for utilizing our Business Solutions Program to save money and make their schools more energy-efficient,” said DLC Chief Customer Officer Kristy Stone. “The rebate awarded to the district is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation, and we’re honored to be a part of a project that will benefit students, staff and the community for years to come.”
DLC’s Business Solutions Program continues to offer attractive incentives for businesses considering energy-efficient upgrades, offering rebates and incentives for commercial, industrial and institutional customers who install qualifying energy-efficient equipment, including LED lighting. The program aims to make the transition to sustainable technologies more affordable, reduce overall energy consumption and help organizations lower their carbon footprint. With added bonuses currently available for large commercial customers, now is an opportune moment for businesses and organizations to explore the benefits of participation.
