Employees Continue Tradition of Participating in Annual River Sweep Event
On June 14, employee volunteers continued Duquesne Light’s nearly 30 year tradition of participating in the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Committee’s (ORSANCO) annual River Sweep event. Through a partnership with two local nonprofit organizations, Friends of the Riverfront and Allegheny CleanWays, River Sweep helps to keep Pittsburgh’s rivers and shorelines clear of litter and debris as well as continues the beautification of surrounding trails.
This year, 35 employees from departments across the Company volunteered and collected more than 30 cubic yards of trash and 32 scrap tires. Along with the expected garbage and debris, such as fallen tree limbs, plastic bottles and fast food waste, several unusual items were collected, including a truck bed liner, a super soaker, plastic sheriff’s badge and a small bowling pin. In addition to collecting trash, volunteers planted 10 trees, spread 10 yards of new mulch and removed weeds and vines on the trail alongside the Ohio River.
