Duquesne Light Company Urges Customers to Prepare for Winter Storm Fern
Significant snowfall likely across the region; widespread power outages not expected

PITTSBURGH — Duquesne Light Company (DLC) is urging customers to prepare for a potentially significant, long‑duration snowfall beginning Saturday evening, Jan. 24, and continuing through late Monday morning, Jan. 26. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch for the Pittsburgh region, forecasting between 8 and 12 inches of snow, with the possibility of more in areas that experience persistent or heavier snow bands.
While snowfall totals may shift as forecasts are refined in the coming days, current projections indicate that the snow will be dry and powdery — conditions that are less likely to place heavy stress on trees and electrical equipment.
As the current forecast stands, DLC is not anticipating a large power outage event, but the company is prepared to respond to any outages safely and as quickly as possible and is continuing to coordinate with the NWS. Because of potentially hazardous travel conditions, some response times may be delayed during the weather event.
What Customers Can Do
While widespread outages are not expected, customers are still encouraged to be prepared:
- Charge all important electronic devices.
- Prepare an emergency kit with non-perishable food, water, medication, first-aid supplies, flashlights and other essentials. Store it in a convenient location.
- If possible, have an alternate source of heating available such as a wood-burning stove or fireplace.
- Sign up for My Alerts to receive timely communications from DLC.
In the event of an outage:
- Call 9-1-1 for any emergency medical needs.
- Report it on DLC’s free mobile app, DuquesneLight.com or by calling 888-393-7100.
- Avoid any downed power lines, give ample space to lineworkers and stay away from objects or puddles in contact with downed lines.
- Immediately report downed wires or other hazardous situations to DLC’s emergency number at 888-393-7000.
- Avoid opening the refrigerator or freezer to help preserve food.
- Use flashlights or battery-operated lanterns for emergency lighting. Avoid using candles or other potential fire hazards.
- Keep generators far from buildings. Refrain from operating them in confined spaces, including garages.
- Check on elderly and vulnerable family and neighbors who might need additional assistance.
- Exercise extreme caution when traveling in dangerous conditions.
