AHN Hospitals Achieve Significant Energy Efficiency Improvements and Incentives Through Program With Duquesne Light Company
Duquesne Light Company incentives recognize lighting retrofits and energy-efficiency improvements at AHN Allegheny General, West Penn and Forbes hospitals
PITTSBURGH — Demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship and reducing the environmental impact of its operations, Allegheny Health Network (AHN) has achieved a significant energy efficiency milestone through comprehensive lighting retrofits and facility optimization projects across Allegheny General Hospital (AGH), West Penn Hospital and Forbes Hospital. These efforts, which align with AHN's mission to foster healthier communities, have also resulted in over $680,000 energy-efficiency incentive rebates from Duquesne Light Company (DLC).
The incentives were awarded through DLC's Business Solutions Rebate Programs and recognize AHN's proactive investment in LED lighting upgrades, energy-saving technologies and building performance improvements across three of its hospitals. These DLC programs are available to a wide range of business customers, including small businesses, that invest in qualifying energy-efficiency projects, helping reduce energy use, lower operating costs and improve facility performance.
Collectively, the projects at AHN have resulted in energy savings totaling more than 6.5 million kilowatt-hours since they were implemented in 2022.
According to Dan Lesinski, AHN's energy and sustainability manager, the project resulted in reduced emissions by 4,400 metric tons, which is akin to 11.2 million miles driven by the average car, or protecting over 4,000 acres of forest.

"These projects demonstrate that investing in energy efficiency can deliver meaningful environmental benefits while creating savings that can be redirected toward initiatives that support our patients, staff and communities."
The incentive program recognized several key AHN projects, including:
- More than 31,000 LED lighting fixture and 1,000 exit sign upgrades at AGH.
- Approximately 7,000 LED lighting fixture upgrades at Forbes Hospital.
- Facility retro-commissioning, including HVAC improvements and control upgrades to optimize building performance and energy use at West Penn Hospital.
- Various additional smaller-scale lighting projects implemented across the network.
